Founder and CEO of Legko.com, an interior design studio in the shell of an IT service, Katerina Fedorova on how the company got its start in an attic office and why design in the 21st century is not a luxury.
My path to Legko.com has been an ornate one. Ten years of work in large companies: she worked as the general director of a media holding, opened a network of kindergartens, was the executive director of a federal radio station. But at one point I wanted to take a break and look for myself in creativity. I went to study at the International School of Design.
This business fascinated me, but I didn't succeed in becoming a designer: there was not enough team, drive from an ambitious goal.
I saw many opportu Pointing Designs nities in the digital space and began to monitor the markets in Europe and the United States. Democratic mass design was gaining popularity there. In Russia, this niche was practically empty. Then I got fired up with the idea of my own online service: I wanted good design to become a habit for Russia as well.
Gradually, like-minded people appeared. One of the first members of the team was our current Marketing Director. And an idea that two people believe in is practically a business. Then we grew to five people: two developers, a marketer, a product manager, and me.
Start in the attic and Napoleonic plans
There are statistics according to which startups with business plans fail, and those created “on their knees” are developing. So, we had a business plan. At the start, we thought to create a huge service that helps the client in everything related to the relationship between a person and a house: from choosing a home to moving into a renovated and furnished apartment (and even paying for housing and communal services).
Imagine: New Year's holidays in 2017, the whole country is resting and celebrating. And the five of us are sitting in our tiny office - in an attic with an area of 8 m². We roll Whatman paper on the floor, argue until two o'clock in the morning and, as a result, write a business plan into many sheets, with a bunch of graphs, formulas, optimistic and pessimistic scenarios, and so on.
In the process of further immersion, we realized that there was no point in going to the territory of CIAN, Avito and Domofond. In the end, the original business plan had to be torn up and thrown away, focusing on the design and renovation work.
In January 2017, we received the first investment of 5 million rubles from a private investor. With this money, we assembled a team of ten people, launched the beta version of the platform and got the first clients.
In just two years, we raised 80 million rubles, which are mainly invested in product development and marketing.
We found out what difficulties people face when ordering design projects in traditional studios and from private designers. There were three main problems:
1. Many complained that the designer seemed to understand them at the start, but at the end the project was not at all what the customer wanted.
